Primary School
The SPN 21 curriculum specifies eight key learning areas which describe in broad terms the knowledge and understanding that all students need to acquire through theirprimary school education. These key areas are:
Languages
Social Sciences and Humanities
Mathematics
Arts and Culture
Science
Technology
Islamic Religious Knowledge and MIB
Physical and Health Education
Student Centred Learning
In Years 1 to 3 the emphasis is on the 3Rs, socio-emotional development and personality development; while in Years 4 to 6 the emphasis shifts to the application of the 3Rs and complex skills plus the development of personality, attitudes and values.
Because the curriculum now places greater emphasis on student-centred learning and activity orientated pedagogy; there will be more emphasis on the process of learning and less emphasis on drilling for examinations. This opens up a unique opportunity for
the school to develop ‘project-based learning’ to a whole new level.
Commencing 2020: through teachers’ observations and interviews with the students and discussion with parents, we will introduce a projects program in primary Year 1 to engage every student in a substantial project-based activity to research a topic or area
of interest of their choice to encourage self-motivation, that will provide a special deep understanding of that interest. This will effectively be a ‘learning agreement’ between the student and the teachers where the teacher most suited for the project will be a facilitator providing guidance when required by the student; plus oversight from a projects supervisor who will monitor and document the progress of all the students. The teacher and supervisor will then assist the student in presenting their project at the end of the term or end of the year (depending on the ‘project agreement’ made with the student). The presentation might comprise a board display, models, videos, with the school making a video of any personal presentations.
